I'm using a "known" filter to move messages from my inbox to more "global" directories like "friends & family" (or "work" or "colleagues", or whatever, its just to have them away from the inbox as "known"), and from there they are picked up by Virtual Folders where needed. The VF's are set so that they filter both where the particular person (or AB group) is either sender or recipient.
