According to www.rarlab.com :
-------------------------
3. RAR versus ZIP

Comparing to ZIP file format, RAR provides a number of advanced
features: more convenient multipart (multivolume) archives, tight
compression including special solid, multimedia and text modes, strong
AES-128 encryption, recovery records helping to repair an archive even
in case of physical data damage, Unicode support to process
non-English file names and a lot more.

-------------------------

You don't have to pay extra fees for SFX (self extacting) modules. It
also can create .zip files. Among good features, on the fly text or
file search in an archive, benchmark feature, creating profiles for
groups of various compression settings, creating recovery records,
creating volumes (parts). You can create solid archives, which all data
treated as a single stream. This could increase compression when
compressing similar files. ZIP doesn't have this feature...

In my opinion, it is much better than WinZip.
