Correct. This my very point: I can edit the message externally and
then import it. What is the purpose of not allowing me to do it
internally?

Correct again. If I have a reason to ensure that the message has not
been altered, I won't. If I did, your sig would tell, regardless of
whether I altered it from within TB or externally. So what exactly is
the point of not allowing me to alter messages internally?
