No, on my system anyway "save the message" doesn't close the message I
am editing, it merely saves it so that if my system crashed at that
particular moment, I wouldn't have lost the work done to date. The
message remains parked (as messages are while being edited) and open.

"Put the message in Outbox" saves and unparks the message and closes the
editor allowing the message to be sent.

"Save draft" saves the message, closes the editor but leaves the message
parked.
