Thanks for the detailed guidance but I've just spent two hours trying to get 
the right
sort of certificate and trying to work out how to import and FireFox refuses to 
import
anything, I can't find where in TB to import a certificate. And frankly I don't 
see why I
should be having to do this just to collect the occasional GMail email

It all seemed a good idea at the time. But frankly time is too precious.
