Mainly, it was an attempt to keep some semblance of order at the top
level. I didn't want to end up with a five page lead-in page with a
bunch of stuff that could be sub-categorized.

Good question. I've never used the wiki chat myself. Just off the top
of my head, I'd have to say no just based on the fact that unless a
logged in user is in the chatroom, I'm not sure how a notification
could happen.

I just saw you log on, maybe we could test it.
