I see. I hadn't caught the gist of your question.

I don't see how an external command could technically do that, I think
the macro needs a command that requests the information.

However, I don't know how the macros and templates really work behind
the scenes, so I am not sure it's impossible. Personally, I cannot
imagine a need for this though. Can you help my imagination and
describe a scenario?
