As I write, I've no idea whether the external command can modify the message content so I've set up a small experiment to pause processing to let me modify the file by hand and see what happens. If this text goes through unaltered, it means that an external command set in an outgoing filter won't be able to modify message text. In the meantime, as I wrote upthread, there are uses for this sort of thing.
