I think that you are looking at the Group feature in the addressbook. You will see in the addressbook dialog for individuals there is an entry for Group, so you could define a group of society members and then use the mass mailing features to send messages to all members in that Group. There is more information in the help files which is worth reading carefully as there are some choices about how groups interact with the main addressbook.
