The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a university center of excellence in Defense science and technologies, with a focus on advanced technology naval applications and related areas. ARL is accepting applications for the position of Department Head for the Intelligent Control Department in the Information Science and Technology (IST) Division. The Intelligent Control Department conducts basic and applied research related to the development of innovative control and machine learning mechanisms for non-traditional, cognitive, autonomous, distributed, and highly nonlinear systems. Responsibilities include: Directing a small group of research engineers and faculty; pursue excellence in research by executing funded research; supervision of junior colleagues; seek external research funds; interface with sponsors, and represent the Information Science and Technology Division in areas related to Intelligent Systems; and assemble and support relevant parts of the strategic plans of the Division. Since ARL is an integral part of the Penn State University System, our research faculty collaborates with faculty from academic departments and advanced research centers. Research faculty is also encouraged to associate themselves with academic departments of the university. Such associations allow them to teach courses and supervise undergraduate, graduate, and PhD theses. Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Requirements include a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or any related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of experience in one or more the following fields is required: Machine Intelligence; Sensor Fusion; Multi-Robot collaboration; distributed decision and control; cognitive systems; and social networks.
