This list has been pretty quiet for a while, but I think that the recent election is going to bring lots of Metropolitan area issues to the fore.

First of all, the whole Roads vs Transit debate (and funding) that Terrell brought up this morning.

But, then there is the issue of the Met Council itself -

"As far as Pawlenty sees it, the Met Council
has often overstepped its bounds and grown
"too big for its britches," as he said on a
radio show last week."
Which Radio show? Jason Lewis? Jason Lewis regularly rants on about the Met Council and the evils of Smart Growth.

What will the Met Council look like in two years?

Its exactly the area of Transit and Urban Planning that most concerns me under a Pawlenty administration.
Tim, you and many others.

Rift near for Met Council, governor

"The Metropolitan Council, the Twin Cities' regional planning agency, has pushed a growth plan that hinges on light-rail transit.

Gov.-elect Tim Pawlenty, on the other hand, vows to fund road construction.

The Met Council has clashed with suburban communities that didn't fall in line with its principles.

Pawlenty, a Republican legislator from Eagan, is a strong proponent of local control."

Well I hope that if Pawlenty is for "local control", then he's consistant about it -- rather than looking at ramming bad projects like 35W expansion in Minneapolis despite vigorous objections.

When looking at costs of roads vs costs of transit costs like the polution and cleanup costs need to be included.

Certainly the Republican "base" or the folks who go to GOP caucuses have this knee jerk hatred of "chew chew trains" and think we can build our way out of congestion. Ofcourse the problem with that is land is a limited resource.
