Homeless advocates camp out tonight in downtown Minneapolis
Hi,
I will be sending you a thorough update about the campout in the next
day or so. Acutally, there were many more people there then your friend
had seemed to indicate. Many of them were in the 8 tents as it was cold, many
of us were on the ground. At least 100 people total came by to show support or
stay for the entire campout.
WCCO did do a story on there evening news, that was more than just a
phote, it was an interview with me, MPR did a thorough interview with Caral,
one of the organizers, which aired the night before and the morning of the
campout. The women's press did a front page story (very well done) on the front
page of their most recent issue.
The Pulse will be doing a cover story of the campout combined with
Housing Day on the Hill (Feb. 11th) which will come out after the 11th.
I have a film crew (professoinal) and we are doing a
documentary on homeless ness in Mpls. and the ordinances that criminalize
homeless people. After having to tirelessly pursue the Mayor to keep his word
to do a filmed interview that he backed out of originally, one of his aides
admitted "We know you are not going to let up on him Margaret so he will
do it." (I have this on film)...so the Mayor was interviewed by Lydia Howell a
Pulse Reporter on the Friday after the campout.
The majority of people who stayed throught the night are
homeless... and they were willing to risk arrest by doing so.
There will be another campout in four to six weeks---to coincide
with a County Commissioner's meeting
where they have a public forum.
Over many years of seeing the way people who homeless are
ignored.... I was surprised by the amount of media coverage there was.
Oh,,,KFAI has done extensive coverage of the campout.
Guess I did go into a bit of detail,,, but you deserve it
for showing interest.
Nonetheless,
I am typing up an update that will be sent out to one and all including you.
Peace,
Margaret Hastings
