I don't use the library now like I did when I was a child. I shop at my
local (non-chain) specialty (sci-fi) bookstore for most of my books.
However, I consider librabies to be essential services.

In regards to the issue of police & fire vs. libraries. Well I am a tax and
spend liberal, so I say raise the dang taxes. Keep all the branches open,
as kid I could walk or bike to East Lake. Our walk over to Southeast from
my parents work, or while my dad got his haircut in Dinkytown. Plus the
Downtown library has a great reference desk for any age!

I was in the East Lake branch the other day to pick up some tax forms. The
place seemed very busy, which is what I remember from my childhood.

Maybe another way to look at the issue of libraries is why do we have so
many different systems. I know the answer to this, but could we have a
regional library system?
