Ann:

Originally, the MPLS was going to permanently close four branch libraries. Now, they are operating all branches at reduced hours plus have this two week temporary closing.

The question is: Who do we protest against? The Library Board for deciding to build a new Central Building just before the budget went sour? The City that is still (since incorporation) running an operation that is based on Ward healers? The State for giving money back to the wealthy so that they can take Carribean vacations? The Federal government for giving money to the wealthy so that they can buy a cottage in Costa Rica? The Library closings are the canaries of the whole mess. We do not know which gas did it, but the birds are dead.

Any protests should be directed at all the problems that caused the library closings. The closings are the first warning of many problems to come in all areas of our way of life.

This is happening now. What will happen next? Schools? Health care? More job losses? Etc. Toy canaries in cages on poster sticks? A big canary suit at the head of the protest line?

Thanks.

This list has been awfully quiet for a while. Although the following really targets Minneapolis specifically I thought it might be of interest to a broader audience. I think if the closing of libraries goes unnoticed in one TC location the other library systems will think about trying it too.

Does anyone have any good ideas?    Ann
