I went to the meeting last night and asked the council to consider the
smoking ban for Roseville. Since I am not a resident of Roseville I
focussed on the fact that I spend nearly all my leisure money in Roseville
(Sorry St Paul), and if St Paul provides a clean air environment and
Roseville does not, I will have to find places in St Paul to spend the
same money. I like the places I go to in Roseville, and I really prefer
not to have to change my habits.

There was no time for any questions or discussions, so there is no way to
know how it was received. I felt the council members paid genuine
attention to what I had to say. A Roseville high school student also
spoke in favor of the ban (thanks to this list), explaining that she like
to go to Snuffy's with friends and finds the smoking to be offensive. She
spoke very well, and gave me a new thought too. When high school
students can go to restaurants and sit in smoking areas, it would be
nearly impossible for the staff to control under age smoking, if indeed
they try at all. This means that restaurants that allow smoking provide
a venue that would contribute to the peer pressure on kids to start
smoking. I think banning smoking from restaurants would reduce teen
smoking.

I go to several kinds of social and technical gatherings at Roseville
businesses, and when I have clients come to town, I take them to Roseville
eateries such as the Radisson, and Old Mexico.

To be perfectly frank, I avoid smoking establishments when at all
possible, so the smoky pubs in Roseville won't miss me. However, if I
knew I could go out and it would be smoke free, I would go out more, and
consider it entertainment rather than punishment to go to a bar. Whoever
bans smoking, thats where I will go.
