What am I working on? Hmmm . . .

Revisions to two manuals as part of a 10-manual (or as they call them here, “Operating Description”) package. My company designs and builds cement manufacturing facilities worldwide for cement producers.

  • Preheater & Kiln manual; this is where tons and tons of a mix of ground limestone and perhaps a few other quarried minerals are heated by hot gases to around 2,000 degrees F and then baked at around 3,000 degrees or so in a giant, room-size rotating oven with a coal-fired or gas-fired flame to produce “clinker” — the main ingredient of cement.
  • Clinker Cooler & Transport manual; this next giant, room-size device with moving channels and giant fans in the floor is where clinker is transported to from the kiln and cooled to only around 200 to 300 degrees or so before being conveyed to storage bins and domes; it is here that various grades of clinker are separated out to individual bins or domes. Some clinker is processed into regular construction-grade concrete, some is processed into decorative, light-weight concrete (for patio blocks, etc.) and so on.

After writing computer user manuals (22 years ago) and watching peoples eyes glaze over when I informed them about “paged memory” and the like, it’s nice to see their reaction now when I tell them if they mess with this machinery, they can actually become part of the surroundings. <grin>
