BACKGROUND
I had a single file named GettingStarted.fm, which was the first chapter in the book.
File information:
- Pagination: Double Sided, 1st Page Side = Right, Make Page Count Even
- Document Numbering: First Page # = 1
- Left Master Page: Running H/F 2, which uses "<$paratext[ChapterTitle]>"
- Right Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and Setup Guide"
- First Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and
Front page (ChapterTitle tag)
Master Page = FirstThis page includes the Chapter title with a line above it and an "In this chapter" mini TOC.Further information topic (Heading1 tag)Technical support topic (Heading1 tag)What's next topic (Heading1 tag)Master Page = Right/Left
Headers and footers:
-
The header on the front page, which starts on the right, contains the book title.
-
The header on the next page ("Further information" topic), which starts on the left, contains the chapter title.
-
The header on the next page ("Technical support" topic), which starts on the right, contains the book title.
-
The header on the last page ("What's next" topic), which starts on the left, contains the book title.
THE PROBLEM
Here is the restructured chapter, which now contains four files.
..\SharedFrameMakerFiles\GettingStarted_frontpage.fm
- Chapter title = Getting Started (ChapterTitle tag)
- Master Page = First
- Document Numbering: First Page # = 1
- Pagination: Double Sided, 1st Page Side = Right, Delete Empty Pages
- First Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and Setup Guide"
..\SharedFrameMakerFiles\GettingStarted_furtherinformation.fm
- Section title = Further information (Heading1 tag)
- Master Page = Right/Left
- Document Numbering: Continue Numbering from Previous Page in Book
- Pagination: Double Sided, 1st Page Side = Left, Delete Empty Pages
- Left Master Page: Running H/F 2, which uses "<$marker2>". <$marker2>: Header/Footer $2 = "Getting Started" .
- Right Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and Setup Guide"
..\SharedFrameMakerFiles\GettingStarted_technicalsupport.fm
- Section title = Technical support (Heading1 tag)
- Master Page = Right/Left
- Document Numbering: Continue Numbering from Previous Page in Book
- Pagination: Double Sided, 1st Page Side = Right, Delete Empty Pages
- Left Master Page: Running H/F 2, which uses "<$marker2>". <$marker2>: Header/Footer $2 = "Getting Started" .
- Right Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and Setup Guide"
..\SharedFrameMakerFiles\GettingStarted_what'snew.fm
- Section title = What's new (Heading1 tag)
- Master Page = Right/Left
- Document Numbering: Continue Numbering from Previous Page in Book
- Pagination: Double Sided, 1st Page Side = Left, Delete Empty Pages
- Left Master Page: Running H/F 2, which uses "<$marker2>". <$marker2>: Header/Footer $2 = "Getting Started".
- Right Master Page: Running H/F 3, which uses "<$marker1>". <$marker1>: Header/Footer $1 = "Installation and Setup Guide"
I added extra text to "Technical support", to force creation of a new page, so that I could check the headers. Even though I added just enough text to force a second page (pages 3 & 4), the file now contains pages 3-5. Page 5 is empty, except for a right header with a page number and no marker information. In addition, the Pagination is now reset to Make Page Count Odd! This is, of course, because I set the subsequent file, "What's next", to start on the Left Side.
So I went back to the book file and set pagination to Single Sided, Delete Empty Pages. I now have the correct number of pages, but the headers are incorrect (after the first page). This is, I believe, because Single Sided means that you only get one master page, the Right page!
And so, dear TCP friends, I am currently stymied. Can any of gurus you provide me with guidance on how to set up the Master Page and Pagination correctly?
With many thanks.
Carol
P.S. After putting together this lengthy e-mail, I went back to the book file and set the Pagination to Double Sided 1st Page Side = Next Available Page, Delete Empty Pages. It seems to work. I now have 5 pages in the chapter with no empty pages. I'm going to send this e-mail anyway, so that it gets into the archives! Please let me know if I have inadvertently stumbled on the correct approach!
