Lisa,

You need to be very careful with conditional text. FrameMaker will do
exactly what you tell it to with the text, whether you realize exactly
what you're telling it to do or not. ;-)

As soon as you set a condition for a particular piece of text, you have
to think about everywhere that the text should appear and use the tags
and show/hide indicators accordingly. If you forget to show a particular
condition when you should or forget to tag it to show in your current
file, you'll be missing text. I have that happen sometimes so I have a
figure caption and callout table but no figure between them. Oops!

To combat that type of situation, you should show all conditions at some
point to make sure that something didn't inadvertently disappear. I
always use different colors with each condition, too, so I can turn on
the condition indicators to see what's tagged and what's not.

Is all of that a drawback? Maybe. But when you get used to it and learn
how to work with it, you can do some wonderful things with conditional
text.

Regards!
Donna
