Lisa ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) asked: What do others find satistying about Technical
Writing as a career?
I'd like to quote part of my results from the Clifton StrengthsFinder test
because I feel it accurate depicts what thrills me about being a Tech Writer.
According to the CSF, my top three strengths are Input, Communication, and
Learner. This is what that means:
INPUT
You are inquisitive. You collect things... information-words, facts, books,
and quotations... The world is exciting precisely because of its infinite
variety and complexity... you keep acquiring and compiling and filing stuff
away. It's interesting. It keeps your mind fresh...
COMMUNICATION
You like to explain, to describe, to host, to speak in public, and to write...
Ideas are a dry beginning. Events are static. You feel a need to bring them to
life, to energize them, to make them exciting and vivid... You take the dry
idea and enliven it with images and examples and metaphors. You believe that
most people have a very short attention span. You want your information to
survive... This is what drives your hunt for the perfect phrase...
LEARNER
You love to learn... whatever the subject, you will always be drawn to the
process of learning. You are energized by the steady and deliberate journey
from ignorance to competence... It enables you to thrive in dynamic work
environments where you are asked to take on short project assignments and are
expected to learn a lot about the new subject matter in a short period of
time... This Learner theme does not necessarily mean that you seek to become
the subject matter expert...
So, these are the things I love about Tech Comm: the ability to use my
greatest strengths. This job allows me to collect ideas, to learn new things,
and to communicate them to others. I couldn't have found a more perfect career
if I'd planned it this way!

Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton.
Good luck with the college kids, Lisa!
