Carla, that is a great idea. As I read your post, I thought of a way Lisa
could expand on your idea: start by asking the students to  list (write the
responses on a whiteboard) all the product manuals they've seen, or places
they've seen user instructions. This could go on for 3-5 minutes, if you let
it, but by the end, you'll show them that there are techwriters in _every_
industry, so if they want to be a techwriter, they can really do it in
pretty much any field they find interesting.

An opening like that would generate interest, and show the breadth of the
field.
