We use two markers and conditional text on each marker as appropriate to
handle that same situation. I don't think you can put the variable in
the marker text.

Subject: [TCP] Adding variables to markers in FrameMaker

Hi folks,
First an introduction, since I just recently joined this list: I have
been tech writing and working on localization for software companies in
MA/NH for the past 10 years or so, after transitioning from an earlier
career running internship programs in higher education (no regrets, it
was the best career move I ever made 8^). I have a second full-time job
as the mother of two teenagers, and a part-time avocation as a costume
designer for a local amateur theater group (where project management
skills are very useful). Also, having grown up in the UK, I remain in a
constant battle, even after 20 years, to avoid using British spellings
in my documents.

Now my question: Does anyone know how to add variables to markers in
FrameMaker?

For example, if I have a document that deals with Product A, that I want
to use as a template for a similar document about Product B, I can
create a <product name> variable and use it to replace the name of the
product when it occurs in the body pages of the document. I'd also like
to use the same variable to replace the name of the product in the
running header.
Currently the marker text for the header reads "Product A
Administrator's Guide" - I'd like to be able to use "<product name>
Administrator's Guide" and then use the variable to change the header as
necessary as there will be many more Administrator's Guides for products
after "Product B".
I'm using version 7.0 on Windows NT.

Is this possible? I've looked in the Help and don't see it mentioned.
Or am I going in the wrong direction and is there a much simpler but
completely different way of getting what I want? I'm open to
suggestions.

Hope you can help.
Sharon
