Thanks for all who gave me suggestions. I found the problem. Several contracts ago, I loaded RoboHelp for Word on my system, and when the contract was complete, I took it off....except, it left some residuals behind that were overriding my Adobe PDF settings in Word. I looked everywhere for those old RoboHelp files and couldn't find anything, so I ended up uninstalling Acrobat and Office 2003, scrubbing the registry of all eHelp, RoboHelp and RoboPDF entries, reloading Acrobat and all the updates) and reloading Office. I just created a 3M PDF from a 43M Word file, including all the cross-references.
