Because of other priorities, I had to leave the project that entailed changing cross references, and just got back to it this morning.
Here's what I did that worked (thanks for all the suggestions that helped me get here, especially Sean Brierley's mif advice): 1. Open the file in FrameMaker. 2. Save as mif. 3. Open the mif in a text editor. 4. Do a Find/Replace to change the old cross reference type to the new cross reference type. 5. Save the mif. 6. Open the mif in FrameMaker. 7. Import formats from a document that has the definition of the new cross reference format. 8. Save the mif as a FrameMaker document. Thanks again, everyone! Lisa G.
