However, if STC members do not know what "auto assign" is, except what they see in the poll (see http://techcommdood.blogspot.com for the text that the STC sent out) how can the members make an informed choice? As presented, the survey is misleading, it assumes the zip code assignment is logical; it is not.
Since the members are uninformed about what "auto assign" really does, how can any STC leaders use this information in a meaningful way? They cannot. The survey is meaningless because the workings of "auto assign" were not truthfully represented in the survey. Additionally, were "auto assign" to work as advertised, surely "auto assignment" is more valuable to chapters with large geographic land areas than for smaller chapters. But members are not asked to tell where they live in the survey, so you don't know what size chapter the response is based on. In short, the survey is meaningless at best and cannot reasonably be used as the basis for any discussion other than "how many STC members will vote on our survey." At worst, the survey is deliberately misleading. You are sharing your opinion, not voting for a winner. Therefore, the only context is "we want your opinion on these items. - The board discusses the results at the board meeting.
