Hi all,

Non STCers can ignore this (I prefaced the subject in a useful way to
help).

The STC sent out a survey to members yesterday. The survey asks a few
things, but gives no context for any. In particular it asks about "auto
assign." If you read the survey, you'd think "auto assign" is a benign
nicety that, at worst, will make your life easier. It is not.

"Auto assign" should be done away with. Instead, STCers should be able
to change chapter affiliation any time online at stc.org. Period. No
"auto assign."

"Auto assign" is bad because it's dumb, not smart as you might expect,
because the chapter-to-zip code mappings are illogical and not
communicated, and because "auto assign" changes your chapter affiliation
without notifying you at all.

If you move even one mile, you might be assigned to another chapter,
even if its further away. If you move 150 miles, you might not be
assigned to another chapter, even if one is closer. If your chapter
assignment is changed, it might not be to the closest one or the one you
would expect. You cannot know which chapter you might or might not be
reassigned to if you move, even if you know in advance where you are
moving to. If your chapter assignment is changed or not, you won't be
notified of anything by "auto assign."

For more discussion and information on "auto assign," see:

*       http://www.stcforums.com/viewtopic.php?id=875&p=2
*       http://stcct.wordpress.com/

As you will see, this is not a problem of one chapter (CT) or one
member, as some at the STC would try to have you believe. It's a bad
feature that needs to go away and be replaced by putting chapter
affiliation directly in the hands of STC members through the STC
Website.

So, please consider voting against "auto assign" in the survey that the
STC sent out. Get rid of it completely. If you already voted and want to
change your vote because you didn't know the backstory, please post on
http://www.stcforums.com/viewtopic.php?id=875&p=2 to see if you can get
that done.

Cheers,

Sean
