Well, I was a card-carrying member of the "I just want to talk on the phone"
camp for a long time. I had a dead-simple cellphone that Just Made Calls for
years, until I got a BlackBerry (courtesy of work) about a year ago.

Being able to send and receive e-mail (easily, with a real keyboard) from the
phone was neat, but what was really useful was that it synced up my contacts,
my to-do list, my calendar, and so forth with my work computer automagically,
and that I could do rudimentary (but limited and rather unsatisfying) web
surfing when I was away from a "real computer."

After spending some quality time with the BlackBerry, I was won over to the
"one device for everything" camp, but as good as it was, the integration and
some interface awkwardness left a lot to be desired.

So, no doubt you see where this is going.

I bought an iPhone, though I didn't stand in line for it on the first day. (I
bought it on the second day of availability and was in and out of the store in
ten minutes.)

And, well, I pretty much am in love with the thing. It's really a handheld
tablet computer that also makes phone calls, and because it's an Apple product
(and was clearly design-workshopped within an inch of its life)

Aside from the multi-touch display, which allows you to "squeeze" or "expand"
page views by spreading or pinching your fingers on-screen, there is arguably
nothing revolutionary about any of the functionality on the device; you could
replicate it all if you carried around a cameraphone, a PDA and an MP3 player.

What's revolutionary is how well it's all integrated. Phone numbers behave
like hyperlinks and dial out. :-) Addresses behave like hyperlinks and call up
maps, or if you search for a business and want to add it to your address book,
that's two or three taps on the screen. Und zo weiter.

If you're a gadget freak, it's a must. If you're not, wait until it gets
*much* cheaper before diving in, if at all. :-)
