I used to think that (in fact, it's pretty much what I use my phone for),
but I've come around as I began to actually need a PDA.

So, I'll want my next phone to be a PDA (I'm just not ready to pay
Blackberry rates, thankyewverymuch, when I'm paying my own shot).

I walk a lot (12-kilometer commute three to five times per week), and I've
appreciated the 2 megapixel camera in my phone a couple of times when I've
given the finger (or worse) to people who have either tried to run me over,
or almost ran me over without really trying. When I'm preparing to cross
certain intersections, or when I'm walking certain roads where
stupidity/nastiness has happened, I hold the phone in one hand with the
camera ready. When somebody risks my life (or just p***es me off) I take
several pictures.

When the occasional one makes to get out of his car or to back over me, I
hold up my hand and say: "Hang on.... just sending the last snapshot of you
running that red light" (or whatever they did) "So, what did you want to
talk about?"

In reality, I might not even have sent the first pic, yet. What I want is
insurance - the photos of the incident and of the person approaching me with
murder in their eye - all safely uploaded to a place they can't reach even
if they destroy my phone... and me. The thinking is that they'll hesitate to
do me damage if they think their actions are recorded for posterity - and
the police. The problem is (and I've had experience with only two camera
phones so far) that it takes too bloody many keystrokes and button-presses,
and too much time to actually prepare and send a single photo, let alone a
montage of stupidity and [potential?] violence.

What I need is to be able to set up a macro (for want of a better term) to
send whatever gets clicked to such'n'such an address, right-away-quick-like.

On another front, I'd like to have the equivalent of a Garmin eTrex hcx as
part of my phone... the same one that would have a multi-mega-pixel camera
and full-qwerty PDA capability. :-)

Oh, and it should also receive satellite radio, and have ferocious battery
life.

My point is that people carry many of these things anyway, and why have
multiple devices loading down your pockets, purse, or belt?? If the price is
right, I'm content to use only the features that I need/want and ignore the
rest, much as I do with most of the software that I run on my computers.

The thing that I really want, though, is a well-well-well-thought-out
interface to allow me to effortlessly get the most out of all those
features.

I'm not sure if I can tie techwriting in there... maybe what's needed is a
top-notch interface designer, but I think that many of us could do a good
job at that sort of thing.
