In other words, you have no incentive to pad the writing (makes them amenable to the deal), and you'll soon learn what level of research you can do and still come out okay on the rate. This is a baseline rate for magazine articles and has been for thirty or more years (no inflation adjustment). If you can get more by starting the bidding higher, do so. But it's probably not a bad floor to keep in mind, to avoid losing money on the deal. Ten pages would be $2,500, and if you can turn out that long a paper in a week, you're doing okay at that rate.
