It probably won't work on any platform not using the GNU compiler and
linker. I suspect it'd probably work on the BSDs as well, but it
probably wouldn't work on many of the commercial UNIXes (people often
use the assembler and linker that come with Solaris, for example, even
if they use GCC - and people may also compile with the vendor's
compiler).
