Note that if you can support both PPP and Cisco HDLC on that card, you
can, I think, use "bpf_change_type()" to change the BPF type to match
the current encapsulation.

Presumably referring to the NetBSD libpcap and tcpdump rather than the
tcpdump.org ones - there's no DLT_HDLC support, at present, in the
tcpdump.org ones, but there is in the NetBSD ones.

The tcpdump.org ones should probably treat DLT_HDLC as equivalent to
DLT_C_HDLC (the latter is what BSD/OS called it; libpcap 0.5 called it
DLT_CHDLC, and I'm assuming, perhaps incorrectly that they're the same,
i.e. that the link header is a Cisco HDLC header as described in
section 4.3.1 of RFC 1547 - itojun picked up the tcpdump.org
"print-chdlc.c", so it sounds as if that's the case).
