Good Thoughts for the Day
All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today.

=====================================
Tip of the Day
Provided by Mrs. ABC's Spelling and Phonics Curriculum site at
http://www.mrsabc.com.
(Thank you for allowing us to use your tips of the day.)

Sometimes it is difficult for children to learn a long challenging word. A
good way to teach them is to help them find the little words inside a
big word. You can do this by using a marker to highlight smaller words that
are hidden within the spelling word.

Samuel Morse was born.

Samuel F. B. Morse, once a portrait painter, turned to inventing to make his
fortune. Morse had little training in electricity but realized that pulses
of electrical current could convey information over wires.

sAMUEL MORSE was an American artist, who was struck by a scientific idea and
turned inventor. While on a voyage from London to New York, Morse had a
casual conversation, with a fellow passenger, regarding electricity.
Inspired by the idea that electricity can be sent over any length of wire,
he thought of a way of sending a message through electricity. This idea
finally led to the invention of the electro-magnetic telegraph and the Morse
Code.
http://www.tribuneindia.com/99feb06/saturday/fact.htm

Morse Code and the Telegraph - Morse Code was invented by Samuel F. B.
Morse. He found a way to make an electric current send signals instead of
using signals or written messages. Many people had tried before Samuel
Morse, but had not succeeded. Morse did not have to knowledge about electric
currents to stop trying to find a way. Morse decided to try to make an
"electric telegraph" to send messages. Morse devoted five years in making
the telegraph instrument that would work properly.

Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, the eldest child of the Reverend

Ulysses Grant Biography
Grant was the son of a frontier family. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in
1822 in a two-room cabin in Point Pleasant in southwestern Ohio, near the
Ohio River. His father, Jesse Root Grant, was a tanner. Hannah Simpson
Grant, his mother, was a pious, hardworking frontier woman.

The Family of Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was a devoted family man. He and his wife Julia had four
children and were fortunate not to lose any of them to an early death, as
was so often in the case in those days of untreatable diseases and lack of
the kind of medical care we take for granted today. They were proud of their
children and the children respected them. One author observed that the whole
family was "one big mutual admiration society." Here is a chronology of the
Grant children.

Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885), an American soldier, and 18th President
of the United States, was born at Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio,
April 27, 1822, being the eldest of the six children of Jesse R. Grant, an
American of Scotch descent, and Hannah Simpson Grant, who were married in
Clermont County, Ohio, in June, 1821. His first name was originally Hiram,
but in later life he abandoned its use and signed himself simply U.S. Grant.
During his boyhood he worked on the farm and in the tannery of his father,
attending regularly the schools of the neighborhood, and when 17 years old
received an appointment of the United States Military Academy at West Point

Grant (Groliers Encyclopedia)
Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES. Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the
Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories.
President Abraham LINCOLN staunchly defended him against critics and
promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E.
Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.

The first U. S. Social Security check was sent out as a benefit paymen.

Social Security Timeline
1937 - The Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) required workers to pay
taxes to support the Social Security system. Payroll taxes were 2%.

Brief History of Social Security
Social Security works because it speaks to a universal human need. All
people throughout human history have faced the uncertainties brought on by
death, disability and old age. Prior to the turn of the 20th century, the
majority of people in the United States lived and worked on farms and
economic security was provided by the extended family. However, this
arrangement changed as America underwent the Industrial Revolution. The
extended family and the family farm as sources of economic security became
less common. Then, the Great Depression triggered a crisis in the nation's
economic life. It was against this backdrop that the Social Security Act
emerged.

It is important to know the difference between a Virus and a Hoax. Here are
some links that might help you know the difference. I am getting a lot of
email with hoaxes that others really believe to be true.

Internet Hoaxes
This web site is provided as a public service; however, CIAC does not have
the resources to investigate and/or confirm every hoax currently circulating
the Internet. CIAC appreciates input on questionable hoaxes, but we are not
able to respond back to each e-mail message. You can help eliminate "junk
mail" by educating the public on how to identify a new hoax warning, how to
identify a valid warning and what to do if you think a message is a hoax.
http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

Computer Viruses
Computer viruses. What are they and how to fight them? There are dozens of
books and hundreds of articles on this topic. Hundreds (or thousands) of
experts in dozens (or maybe hundreds) of companies fight viruses
professionally. One might think that the subject is not that important and
complicated to attract such an enormous amount of attention. But this is not
the way things are. Computer viruses have been and still are one of the most
widely spread reasons of loss of information. It is known that in several
cases the viruses blocked the normal functioning of the entire organizations
and companies.
