Hi laptop users (of course, as Del pointed out, only a few of these can be put in your lap without burning your thighs).  I personally have had Dells, and now have a Gateway top of the line, but only because my university is connected to Gateway.  I think that the most important thing that people need to remember is that since the first days of luggable if not laptop computers, things change almost faster than you can shop.  Toshiba may be far ahead on one day, but it will be rated by almost everyone at the very bottom by the time the next surveys come out.  When I got mine, the spectacular Dell had substituted a new keyboard that was widely disdained, while Gateway's new keyboard was loved by one and all.  I haven't that slightest doubt that four months later that could have reversed.  As people have pointed out here, for some people Apple solves many problems, if you don't mind paying sometimes a lot more for the same product.  But, as others have pointed out, you may find that you are blocked out of many software products (which you may not need).
I would look at various buyer's guides on line -- google yourself up one.  I prefer ones where users post personally.  The last time I had to decide between Dell and Gateway, the site I was using posted about 100 on each, and they pointed out things a mail order purchaser would never notice -- about 50 Dell people said that they hated the keyboard, and about 25 Dell people said that the screen distorted images badly.  The only thing bad anyone said out of 100 entries on the Gateway was that it had a chrome type box, which the writer felt should belong only to Apple.  Didn't keep me from buying it.
