EArlier this year or last fall, Sci Am carried an overview of the five major reasons (they called them suspects) why crime has decreased in the past 30 years. It was well-written, to the point, and highly recommended for those of you teaching in this area. The article points out that there is no agreement on any one reason for the decline in the crime rates, just providing a solid overview of the current debates in the field.
