Education Associate for Contemporary Immigrant Perspectives

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is seeking a full-time Education Associate for Contemporary Immigrant Perspectives, who will report to the Education Director. S/he will be responsible for: helping to promote dialogue on contemporary immigration-related issues; incorporating the diverse perspectives of contemporary immigrants into the Museum's programming; and constantly striving to make the Museum more accessible to and relevant for new  immigrants. S/he also assists the Education Director in raising awareness among Museum staff about various viewpoints on issues related to contemporary immigration. 

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate the Kitchen Conversations dialogue and Dialogue on Diversity programs;
  • Coordinate the Shared Journeys English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs;
  • Coordinate the Windows of 97 art installation program and corresponding public programs;

·         Assist with marketing and fundraising for above programs;

·         Represent the Museum to funders, press, artists, exhibitors, and others as needed;

  • Facilitate education programs for learners of all ages;

·         Participate in weekly Education Department and staff meetings;

  • Assist with planning/developing other education department programs and projects; and
  • Serve as Tour Coordinator on Saturdays.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • At least three years work experience, preferably in a non-profit organization;
  • Interest in immigration, familiarity with contemporary immigration issues, and sensitivity to immigrant concerns;
  • Interest in and commitment to dialogic learning and civic engagement;
  • Extremely detail-oriented and organized;
  • Ability to take initiative and work well both independently and in a team environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

 

The ideal candidate would also have the following:

  • Some supervision experience; 
  • Experience with public speaking;
  • Experience as a dialogue facilitator;
  • Experience with ESOL education, ideally as an instructor;
  • Some experience with art administration;
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook; and
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Fukianese.
