there is an exercise in the ASA publication entitled, "Innovative Techniques for Teaching Sociological Concepts," that, IMO does a great job at this. Specifically, it is Technique #42 and the author brings in a bathroom scale to demonstrate the difference between a scale that is reliable (returns the same weight) if the measurement is valid (which is dependend upon the dial that one can turn to establish accuracy).
