Office: 812/ 866-7353 -----Original Message----- studies' concentration. So far, I have been unable to find standard
texts that focus specifically on this
topic. Have any of you come across this kind of text (outside of Marriage and
Family texts)? In addition, if you have suggestions on anthologies or
readers on the general topic of Parenting or specific
aspects of Parenting (especially on the topic of fatherhood in contemporary
culture), I would greatly appreciate your passing along any and all
suggestions. Course syllabi that you
might be willing to share would also be
appreciated! I am afraid I cannot be
terribly helpful in this regard, but as part of a term project, it can be interesting
to acquire a copy of Gordon’s PET (Parent Effectiveness Training) from
the late 1960s and the STEP Program (Systematic Training for Effective
Training) from the 1980s and 1990s. You
can have students do content analysis of these extremely popular
parent-training programs. The differences
in assumptions in the two programs are really quite intriguing, and they both
differ substantially from Behavior Modification approaches. This could give them a look at popular
approaches to parenting—all three of which were designed to be alternatives
to corporal punishment. Rudolph Dreikurs materials (e.g. Children: The Challenge) might also be an interesting read,
having students dig into the assumptions about human behavior that undergird his approach. Keith * *
