Andi,

Good question. It is all in the source. I would question the use of murder rather than homicide. Driving home we heard the following on NPR. "The Chilean president is now a woman"
My wife said, I'll bet she's pleased to know that" :-)

In Phila. there have been 20+ homicides. Some of the press have suggested that at this rate the city will surpass last years rate of 360 some. That number was the (raw) number although some would consider it the rate per year. Rates are usually x per 100,000 population.

Hi All,

I don't teach crime, but got this today and need to respond to someone:

1. The murder rate is rapidly rising
2. Most of those killed are people of color.

Can someone flesh these out with sources if possible...if it's easy, handy, and quick for you.

I thought the murder rate was down a bit along with crime overall I would guess that the majority of those killed are persons of color. (And, we're talking "violent crime" here...not the white collar stuff, environmental racism, or war...which also disproportionately kills the poor and persons of color, yes? However, if you have anything on those, I'd take 'em.)

Thanks.
