A quick note.... Many similar issues were raised over the introduction of ball point pens in the class during the 40's.
In 4th grade you could be kept after school for possession :-)

This trend is deeply troubling to me.

Many students need to use laptops in class because of physical or
learning disabilities. If laptops are banned in class, these students
will either (a) avoid using the technology that they need in order to
learn or take notes, or (b) will become immediately obvious and singled
out to all the other students. I think there have to be better
solutions than this one, which is extremely discriminatory and ableist.

I would think that as sociologists we would be more sensative to the
politics of inequality. But, then, disability is always the last
frontier, as evidenced by how few instructors include disability in
courses or course sections on inequality, stratification,
discrimination, and prejudice.

I think that we've just about reached the point or are close to it when
"technology" is ENSLAVING humans instead of the reverse. The overuse,
abuse and misuse of computers, power point presentations, ipods, etc.,
etc. is rampant and virtually out of control. It is fueled, in part, by
the makers of the relevant hardware/software as well as those who think
that "technological gadgets" are a substitute for good solid teaching
and learning rather than a complement to it.
