Old as it may be, Lillian Rubin's "Families on the Faultline" amde a big impact
on my students last fall. At first they were skeptical-- thinking that anything
written so long ago would have any relevance to today's world. However, careful
discussion, comparison to current research and to Rubin's earlier work brought
students to the realization that the situation for working class families has
changed little and some of that change has been for the worse. This was the
first reading they had in my class. Material in the text was not addressed
until we had examined this book thoroughly. We were able to apply sociological
and family studies theories to the book all semester long. I'd love to see an
update on working class families (or write one myself :) )but this monograph
turned out to be a wise decision for my group of students.

Subject: TEACHSOC: suggestions for a family course
Greetings fellow travelers,

I'm teaching a sociology of families

would like for it to be written by a
sociologist (rather than a
journalist). The class is for lower-division
students. Any brilliant
suggestions?

(I'm toying with the idea of incorporating a full-length

excerpts....)

Thanks for the help!
Kelly
