Thank you Bob.
An interesting aside on seats. Classes started at Hampshire College before construction was complete there were no seats in one of the
classrooms.   The students decided to go with out seats and sit on the risers/floor.  The classroom remains that way today you sit on the carpeted
risers.

So they can add to the no exams, no grades..... no seats :-)

There is also musical chairs which creates competition for limited resources, the chairs, and eventually if you eliminate all the chairs, students can cooperate when they realize that not having any chairs means they can all sit on the floor. I have a copy of this idea that I got from TS years ago. I will post it when I get to my home PC.

Hi,

I go into the classroom before class and arrange the seats in groups of
4 or 5, facing each other. when they arrive the students sit for a
while and then
put them back... assuming that the earlier class had left them in the
wrong arrangement. I come to class a few minutes late to see how far they
have gone. Sometimes I give an expectations survey....how many hours a
week do you expect to spend in class preparation...etc.

The first order of business, groan is organizing themselves into groups
of 4 or 5. http://www.delswork.net/first_day_of_class.htm
