Hi  -- one of our graduates asked me for advice.  While I took a course in sociology of art 40 years ago, and got divorced from a conceptual feminist artist 25 years ago, I don't seem to have any other credentials to help this person out.  No doubt, some of you brilliant folks will have some great ideas?

I am an artist in need of sociological advice.

I just graduated from Ohio University with my MFA in
sculpture, and I’m now teaching at <snip - a major state university>.  I am interested in making
humanitarian sculpture which can be given to
disadvantaged people outside of the United States.
This project is in its earliest stages, I haven’t yet
decided what group of people I should try to help, or
how I should try to help them.  The idea for this
project grew from my awareness of the inequity of
resources between the privileged wealthy, and those in
detrimental situations.

I am seeking advice on:

1.        Specific groups of people that I should consider
directing the work toward.
2.        The best way to help these specific groups.

I am most interested in helping those groups which are
unable to meet their basic needs: food, shelter,
water, etc.

I understand that it is very difficult to accurately
ascertain the best way to help a given culture.  As an
artist, I am capable of making objects which are
beautiful and functional, but I need an experienced
sociologist’s advice on the best way to channel my
efforts.  Have you, in your research, had contact with
people that could benefit from this type of project?
Have you heard of any projects which are/were similar
to what I’m proposing?  Do you have any colleagues
which might be able to help me?

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts that you might
have on how I might structure this project.
