Sarah, we try to do at least one trip per class:

Intro: for mcdonaldization in intro, we actually go to McDonalds and students
have to complete a worksheet locating examples of the five elements of
mcdonaldization...students love it and the local mcdonalds, not knowing what we
are doing, are very compliant and invite students into the kitchen to marvel at
the efficiency of the operation...

Intro: visit the local mall and do an unobtrusive observation of race and
gender and kitchen workers of the all the restuarants in the food court---we
compare to the stores that anchor the food court--there's a correlation btw
race/gender/establishment status...as you might expect we also;

Intro: local funeral home (we read Goffman and dramaturgy coupled with death
and dying for this)

Crim/Deviance; Visit the local prisons--men's maximum security and women's
minimum security

Social Inequality: we visit the Tenement Museum in NYC and then get a walking
tour by Big Onion Tours--Columbia U history grad students specializing in NYC
nieghborhoods (note, very few Italians live in Little Italy!);

Armed Forces & Society: we do a Video Teleconference with soldiers in Iraq and
Afghanistan to tell us what they are experiencing (most units have VTC systems
on the FOBs linked to the U.S.)

Subject: TEACHSOC: Creative Field Trips workshop

I have been asked to organize a workshop called "A Look Beyond the Classroom:
Creative Class Trips that Bring Sociology to the Everyday."

Anyone have any imput?

I take my classes to a local shopping mall to search for evidence as to whether
or not we are a culture that supports "family values" or violent behavior.
