It sounds like you may have a good selection of fruit available in a few seasons! I lived out in the country when I was growing up, with grandparents and parents who gardened, so it is just as natural as breathing for me to always have something growing! Unfortunatley, I live in the city right now, so I can't have my garden right at the house as I would like. Over here, we can rent garden plots though. I rent two 45'x50' plots. Up until this season, they were doing a seasonal deal where you had to be out of the plots by the last day of the year, and they would plow it up between then and March 1st. This year, they created a second group of plots for those of us who are a little more serious about it and want year-round gardening, so now I can just pay a yearly rental fee and keep the same space from year to year. This is much better for me, as I have the tiller to work the soil and don't need them plowing it up each season. Also, I do the fall/winter/spring garden, so that is a big plus. I'm just finishing up putting up a permanent wire fence around the two plots to keep out the deer. Most people just did some posts and some of that mesh netting, but I just decided to go ahead with building a proper fence with metal T posts and 5ft wire :)
I'll be starting my planting either this weekend or at the beginning of next week. I'm an inconsistent gardener - some years I plant a lot, others I get too busy and let the season pass by. I'm trying something new for me this year - I went to the Atlanta Local Food Initiative's fruit tree sale in January, and went *way* overboard. I came back w/ 2 pawpaw trees, 2 fig trees, a serviceberry tree, 2 elderberry bushes, a goji berry tree, 2 hazelnut trees and a bunch of strawberries. I've pretty much maxed out the small tree capacity of the backyard w/out making it an actual orchard. 8-/ So far, I've only seen sure signs of life in the hazelnut and strawberries. Fingers crossed for the rest - wish me luck! I'm still deciding on the traditional summer veggies, but I do have a couple of cool season plants already in pots - a little lettuce and some garlic that had sprouted on the kitchen counter. How much space do you till? My garden tends to be tucked into Earthboxes next to the driveway, or small beds scattered about rather than one large planting. later! horka n On Tue, Mar 11, 2014 at 03:46:00PM -0400, Allen Beddingfield wrote: > So, how many gardeners do we have on here? Anyone getting ready for the 2014 summer gardening season? I'm about to get out the tiller and start getting the rows ready for beans, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, pepper, etc... Tomato, pepper. and eggplant plants are starting to grow under the lights indoors, and I'm ready to get outside and start working! While I love cold weather, I'm ready for it to go away, so I can get a start on the garden :D > > -- > Allen Beddingfield > [email protected] > _______________________________________________ > tech-chat mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.linuxmoose.com/mailman/listinfo/tech-chat -- Horkan Smith 678-777-3263 cell, [email protected] _______________________________________________ tech-chat mailing list [email protected] http://lists.linuxmoose.com/mailman/listinfo/tech-chat -- Allen Beddingfield [email protected]
