Yeah, the rain last year ruined just about everything for me in the garden. I had a good crop of tomatoes, but most everything else drowned. Wow, a 1/2 acre garden sounds pretty nice. Right now, I just have two 45'x50' plots. I'm hoping to be able to move back out of the city and into the countryside in the next few years, and having a good spot for gardening will top the list of things I will be looking for in a place. I grow a lot of heirloom tomatoes (German Queen, Cherokee Purple, Jeff Davis, and Prudens Purple have made the list so far for this year), along with some Romas (I don't care for them, but my girlfriend does), eggplant, squash, green beans, lima beans, cucumbers, hot pepper, and okra. Hopefully your gourds will do better this season. Those gourd vines are HUGE. I remember us having some of those when I was in elementary school, and the vines wrapping the whole place up. My dad used to put up the poles for the martins, but those things get pretty aggressive. I remember walking near it and having them flying down and squawking over my head. ----- Original Message ----- From: William Bagwell Sent: 03/11/14 07:53 PM To: tech-chat Subject: Re: [tech-chat] Gardening?
Have been an avid gardener off and on since I was a teen. Past ~15 years my wife and her parents have managed a 1/2 acre+ garden. They have two tractors so it could be much bigger except it has to be fenced to keep the deer out. Mostly herloom varieties, so only one of each to prevent cross pollination. I personally started growing gourds a few years ago with the intention of attracting a colony of purple martins. 2012 with the late frost and drought got a 1/2 dozen useable gourds. Not enough to bother putting up a pole... Last year, wetest is 20 years, got 1 (yes ONE!) more usable gourd:-( Hoping for a better 2014. -- William On Tuesday 11 March 2014, Allen Beddingfield wrote: > So, how many gardeners do we have on here?
