Hi Guys,
(Also posting to DC-404.)
I've finally fixed this ... after screwing around with it for 2 hours.
WOW! What a way to waste an afternoon. And, I have to do this on every
computer I own as well as my Dad's. Fun, fun.
For those of you who are interested, here's how I fixed it.
This is what my Firefox used to look like, and now what it looks like
again, simple, clean, and functional.

First, I had to install Classic Theme Restorer, then tinker with the
settings. You can get to the settings either from the tools menu or
from the addons screen. I'm going to donate a couple of bucks to the
developer of the addon, as suggested on the web page.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/
Here are my settings:

Then, I had to click on an empty space, next to my menu bar, click
customize, and work on moving things back to the add on bar, moving
things around, and, in some cases, deleting things by moving them off of
the screen and back into the customize selection box (rather than
actually deleting them). At one point, after saving my customizations,
I had to right click on an icon that was sitting beside my address bar,
then click move to menu. I don't know exactly where the icon went, but,
presumably, it's still hanging around if I need it later, but I wanted
it gone at the moment.
Then, I had to go about getting my Forecastfox weather monitoring system
back. This thing is very cool. See the bottom of the Firefox screen
shot photo. Firefox had disabled the old version when I "upgraded".
Firefox's addon search system says the plugin is not compatible with ver
29 and it won't let you install. You have to download the new plugin
directly from the Forecastfox site.
This page has a link to a new version of the addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/forecastfox-weather/reviews/
And the link to the new addon is:
https://static.getforecastfox.com/downloads/forecastfox-latest.xpi
I installed that. Then, I had to tinker some more with the customize
menu option to get the addon's display to appear back at the bottom.
Finally, if you want to stack your tabs up on the side, like I do, you
can do so with this addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab/
Wow, silly me for thinking I'd get anything done today other than a
couple of "simple" updates to the PC. I guess I'll have to go to supper
and deal with other things later.
By the way, if any of you are still using IE 8 on Windows, you might
want to upgrade. I don't think it's being updated any more, just like
XP, and some new vulnerabilities just came out that affect all the
IE's. Presumably, they'll patch the new ones. I just allowed the
update for that to run, and I'm sure I'll have all sorts of fun going
through the settings and configuring THAT too. I only use IE for things
where FF won't work.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Ron

Stuff like this is why I have long since given up on doing anything
but the most basic customizations to any app I use. BTW, I am not
liking the new Firefox UI, either. If I wanted to use a browser with
the look and feel of Chrome, I would be using Chrome....

Subject: [tech-chat] Firefox team #$%^%$#$ screws up UI AGAIN with ver 29
Hi all,
(Also posting this on DC-404.)
The Firefox team has screwed up the UI AGAIN with release 29.
Supposedly sleek and streamlined, they've taken away the STATUS bar or
addon bar or whatever it's called lately. So, WARNING, if you like
Firefox the way it was, don't update and turn off auto updates ... or
find a way to restore the UI. Now, all the things I did have on the
status bar at the bottom have been moved to my address bar, at the top,
and now the address bar is about 1/2 its normal size. Not only that,
the Forecastfox weather alert system I HAD on the bottom is gone and
disabled. I hate the things they keep doing like this.
So, I just happened to have downloaded the installer for 28, since I
heard this was coming. So, now I get to choose between having a UI that
I hate or never upgrading past 28.
There's supposed to be a way to put the old UI back while keeping
version 29. Does anyone know how to do that?
Sincerely,
Ron
