Hi all,

I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to post an update.

I was able to resurrect my wife's phone (an LG Chocolate) by having the Verizon rep at the Alpharetta store (which still has tech support) reflash the phone's brain. Her phone has been working since then.

However, mine (an LG Venus) has developed a flaky touch pad, which makes it almost unusable for certain functions. Reflashing won't likely solve that.

So, I started considering these same options again. I decided to follow someone's advice on the DC404 forum and get a refurb phone off of ebay. I'm getting this LG env3 side slider / clamshell feature phone for $ 35:

Reviews are good on this, and some people say it's the best feature phone for Verizon, even though discontinued. This particular vendor buys just the phone wholesale and adds a new oem battery, battery door if necessary, and charger. So, hopefully, the battery and the phone will both be good. And, this phone has no touch pad to fail (I think).

I should have it in a few days and we'll see how it goes. If I hadn't done this, I would have gone with a Ting phone on the Sprint network, which can also roam on Verizon's towers for voice only.

Sincerely,

Ron

Here's another small piece of data I found out. Ting, which resells the Sprint network with simple and fair pricing, also allows free voice roaming on Verizon towers. So, it might be a good alternative to get cheaper pricing and still get my operation in the boonies that I want. It's not worth it now for me to buy new phones if I don't have to, but it's something I'm keeping in mind. If you have a phone that uses 500 minutes of voice, 100 text messages, and no data, the charges on Ting would only be $ 18 / mo. Also, if you wish, you can use a smartphone and still cap your data usage at any amount you want, even zero. If you do that, the phone can still use data when it's on wifi.

Sincerely,

Ron

call on the phone. I get about 300 emails per day from alternate energy
mailing lists and such. I don't always see new email messages very quickly.)
