I figured out at least one way of doing it.  I was dragging the videos onto the 
timeline.  If I put the source video in the preview window I could click 
insert.  Next to the insert button was overlay which I guess is the default 
action if dragging and dropping.

You should be see an icon for "split" if the clips have been merged together.
Have you tried dragging clip 2 to the right, away from clip 1?

can I drag clip3 onto the timeline between clip1 and clip2 and have it move 
clip2 over.  When I do it now it is shortening clip2 so the video with all 3 
added is the same length as just the 2 clips together.  I want the timeline to 
shift to the right when I add a clip in the middle.
