I¹ve had this happen several times.  Unless it is telling you that a network
connection cannot be found, it doesn¹t necessarily mean that the network
card isn¹t working.  The first time it happened to me, I researched for a
week, trying different suggestions, and I never got anything to work.  A
clean XP install worked well, though, and that is my best suggestion.
