I multicast to labs up to 30 machines,...the multicast take 6-10 minutes depending on image size.

I use Cat5/5e on standard cisco/HP/ or dell switches. I'm not crossing vlans or routers. I'm not sure, but it might be interesting what wireshark would see when you try to do your casting.

Do you have any wireless bridges on the network. We have a bridge setup and I can not use multicast as my nortel switches can't handle trying to route the multicast. At least on the os version we are on. I can do multicasting if I disconnect that bridge but otherwise direct broadcast or unicast only (ghost settings as I don't use FOG).

Are you doing multicast? If it is taking forever with a lot of machines it sounds like it is doing unicast. If it is sluggish with just 1 computer it could be another issue though. I know with multicast you typically at the mercy of the slowest connection and that could be causing an issue as well.

We do have Cat5e and 10/100 switches.

I, too, have someone helping with the FOG details so that I don't
    have
to deal with it right now. I only know what he has told me -- and we
are only doing two at a time. It will become more crucial when we do
the laptop cart soon instead of the groups of 4 desktops per
    classroom.

6 Gig in 10 minutes to 10 machines seems pretty good! What kind of
infrastructure do you have? CAT-5 and typical 10/100 switches?

If you present our problem as stated to your student helper on
    Monday,
I wonder if he would have any ideas.
