Yeah, while this is suppose to stay in a classroom, we would definitely want
the option of moving it.

Subject: Re: [tech-geeks] mobile labs

We've had good luck with both a Bretford laptop cart (the one that holds 16
laptops) filled with decent business-class laptops, and the new Dell Mobile
lab solutions. The cart for the Dell 2100s is absolutely awesome, however
we found over the past year that at 10" netbook is too small of a machine
for our high schoolers to comfortably use. So this year we're trying out
the Latitude 13 with another Dell cart. If anyone's interested I'd be happy
to let you know how that cart works out (still getting it set up).

We haven't looked into any storage that isn't on wheels; there's not a cart
that we have that hasn't been asked to be moved from its 'permanent'
location.

A lot goes into planning for a mobile lab. The following questions need
to be asked and answered:

1) How many hours per day will this "lab" be used?

Battery issues are very important and you need to consider how the
devices will be recharged.

2) What are the applications needed?

If this lab's main "raison d'etre" is to access the Internet, then
netbooks without hard drives would suffice. Not only are these less
expensive than "full blown" laptops, the batteries will last longer as
well. If your only needs are Internet, getting to students' home
folders, word processing, and spreadsheets then a netbook would fit the
bill nicely. If your application needs are greater - proprietary apps,
etc - then you must consider the specs for those applications and plan
accordingly.

There is no generic mobile lab. Any mobile lab needs to be designed to
fit the specific needs of the user base.
